Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about installations, maintenance, or indoor air quality? Our HVAC FAQ at Carolina Comfort Heating & Cooling, Inc. covers it all for Asheville, NC homes and businesses, from residential HVAC to commercial HVAC!

  • I found a great deal on a ductless system online. Will you install the equipment if I order it?

We do not install HVAC equipment purchased online. While we appreciate good value, there are significant risks involved, including receiving the incorrect size for your home, stolen property, or counterfeit equipment. Furthermore, most major brands will not honor warranties on equipment that is not purchased through a reputable vendor.

For example, as of September 2016, Mitsubishi sent a bulletin stating, "Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. Cooling & Heating Division does not encourage or endorse the online resale of MEUS-HVAC products due to the specialized nature of the products, the need for trained sales support, and the requirement for proper installation by a trained and licensed contractor. In order to strictly govern the Internet activity of MEUS-HVAC products, Mitsubishi Electric has adopted a new Internet Sales Policy ) UMAP policy and Internet Reseller Guidelines) to control the online advertised price of our products, while requiring compliance to specific guidelines when selling Mitsubishi Electric products over the Internet."

With 50 years in business, we prioritize our reputation and the safety of our customers and our technicians. We cannot assume responsibility for installing products that may be mismatched, improperly sized, or damaged. Additionally, the State of North Carolina requires that a licensed contractor with all necessary insurances pull a permit and perform the installation.

Ask yourself, if there is an issue with the installation or equipment, how would you know?

When a reputable, licensed contractor manages the order and installation, they can work directly with their vendors to remedy any issues with the equipment. If there is an issue with the installation, they are required to have a one-year labor warranty. They are also required by code to have a load calculation on file to make sure your unit is properly size and appropriate for your home. If you purchase the equipment yourself, it may become difficult to determine if a failure is due to the product itself or the installation, potentially leaving you without recourse.

  • Do you work on window units or kerosene heaters?

No. These items are unfortunately made to throw away or be broken down and recycled.  It would cost you more to have someone to work on this type of unit than to replace it with a newer, more efficient model.

  • What is SEER and how important is it?

SEER is a term developed by the EPA Energy Star program and stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER rating the more energy efficient the unit is. SEER ratings are used to help compare different brands side by side. Currently, new installs are required to be a minimum of 14.3 SEER. Please click this link for more information.

  • Can you move an existing outdoor unit?

We have the experience and we would be happy to give you a quote. Moving a unit is not as easy or inexpensive as one might think. It takes 2 people most of the day to reroute the electrical connection and lineset. Once your lineset is cut, the refrigerant will need to be recovered and the lineset vacuumed to remove any air or moisture. You may also need new lineset and will need to have more refrigerant added to your unit once it is resoldered.

However, please note, any time you move an existing unit, especially an older one, you are taking the risk of a part being jostled or loosened and air or moisture entering your system.  When reconnected there is a small chance your unit may not start up or may need a part repaired or replaced. We offer no warranties when moving an existing unit. Furthermore, once the job is complete you may need to hire someone to repair drywall, masonry, and/or paint.  Despite all of the above, we have happily moved many units with no issues whatsoever on any of them.

  • What is covered under a manufacturer’s warranty?

When you purchase an HVAC unit of any brand, typically it comes with some standard warranties. If registered after installation, most brands offer a 10 year warranty on major components. If it is not registered, or if it is used in a commercial application or multifamily application (apartment complex for example), it will revert to a 5 year warranty. Your manufacturer will honor this warranty on the major components only which usually are things like evaporator coils, motors, compressors and heat exchangers. They do not honor high wear items such as contactors, capacitors, or filters.

  • Why isn’t labor covered under warranty?

The manufacturer is warranting the part it manufactured only. Unless the manufacturer offers an additional labor warranty you can purchase, it will only cover the major component it was responsible for creating. Once the technician fills out some paperwork supporting the failed part claim, the manufacturer simply gives the HVAC company the part they promised they would replace under warranty when you purchased the equipment. However, they do not pay for diagnostic, labor , or the shipping of the part for that matter, to put the part back on. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to pay the HVAC company for any diagnostic, labor, or additional material costs. Simply put, an HVAC company does not work for the manufacturer; they are hired by you to make the repair.
